WFMI Jumped 14% Today

Whole Foods (WFMI) rose $ $6.41 (14.03%) today on news that it’s buying Wild Oats.

News: Whole Foods buying Wild Oats

Congrats to pfstock who bought this stock before the jump.

NEW and NFI

NEW and NFI had a huge drop today. NEW dropped 1.22 (6.50%) to 17.55 and NFI dropped 7.46 (42.48%) to 10.10. I’m thinking of buying it for a quick bounce. It’s a very risky play, but the gains could be good.

Words From the Wise

My parents always tell me not to do business with family and close friends. It is interesting how most people, including myself, would want to do business with best friends, but the wise would suggest it is not a smart choice. After hearing stories and explanations I can see from their perspective.

In business, everything comes down to money. And where there’s money, there’s human conflict. I have heard many stories where families members get together to start a business and end up in nasty fights, which tears apart family relationships. My mother told me about a story of two sisters who nearly killed each other. Their business went sour and one of the sisters thought the other one took the money. So, believing the other sister had betrayed her, she almost burned down the other sister’s apartment. These stories sound extreme, but I have heard several of these and they were people I have met before when I was younger. And some of them were my relatives.

Certainly, there are success stories. When there are profits and no conflicts, there are happy faces. But what if things don’t go well? What if your best friend/relative does not like the way you run the business and associates that negativity in your relationship. Here’s a question to ask before starting a business with a close friend or relative. Is it worth putting the close relationship at stake?

RACK, GLW, and SIRI calls

I bought Rack calls on 2/12/07 for $3.80. The calls are for Jan (2008) 17.5, and they’re currently up 14%. I hope it continues to go up.
I bought GLW calls on 2/9/07 for $2.55. The calls are for Mar 20, and they’re currently down 26%. I’m looking forward to a bounce back.
I bought SIRI calls today for $0.35. The calls are for Jan (2008) 5, and there’s currently no change in price. I’m betting on the merger.

Sold AMD

I sold my 1000 AMD shares last Friday at $14.90 for a loss of $1.10/share. The total loss for AMD is $1110.

Looking at Property in Hackensack

I joined my friend in looking at some property in Hackensack, NJ. There was a new development going on Prolifly St. My friend was looking at a 1500 sq ft 2-bedroom apartment, priced at $399K. The condo’s design was loft-style, so it was spacious. It has two baths and a walk-in closet in the master bedroom. The condo comes a reserved parking space on the ground floor. The location of the building was right next to a 24 hour Rite-Aid store. The NJ Transit train and bus were two blocks away. The George Washington Bridge is only 8 minutes away by car.

My friend was looking for an apartment for himself and his girlfriend. The place would be a comfortable living for both of them.

I was looking at it from an investment standpoint. I ran some numbers in my head and figure I would need at least $2500/month in rent to cover the expenses of owning it. Even though the apartment is very spacious and would definitely be a luxury living, I don’t think it would be likely I can rent out the apartment for $2500.

Hackensack is very close to New York City. The property there has a very good chance of appreciation in the next few years. My friend and I predict that the apartment we looked at may hit $600K in two years.

Here is some information on the building:
