The Apprentice L.A. - Episode 9

In this episode, the two teams had to make a webisode to promote a cleaning product. I thought Arrow’s team had a great idea and they implemented it well. Kinetic’s idea has a nice hook at the end, but they didn’t do a good job promoting the product, so they lost.

This stir my creative thinking and makes me want to create a webisode. I have several ideas in mind. I will have to see if I can put them to videos.

DVD: Biography - J. Pierpont Morgan: Emperor of Wall Street (2005)

Posted on March 30th, 2007 in Reviews by Smarty

Everyone on Wall Street has heard of the name J.P. Morgan, but few knew how he had achieved his success. This DVD goes into his life and tells you the story of the super ambitious man.

J.P. Morgan became a millionaire at a young age and could have retired but his dreams were bigger than that. He was good at interacting with people and a highly skilled business man with vision. He saved the U.S. from bankruptcy two times and became a man with extraordinary power. Because of the government’s dependency on him, Theodore Roosevelt knew something had to be done. Thus, Roosevelt created the Federal Reserve.

Aside from business, J.P. Morgan was a fine art collector. His art collection was so huge, he opened a private art gallery to store his paintings, which later became an art museum.

The DVD covers the biography of his life and not much about his business strategies and ways of thinking. I see it more like a summary. If you’re interested in learning about J.P. Morgan’s life, then rent this DVD.

AMD A Buy?

Posted on March 28th, 2007 in Stocks by Smarty

AMD is trading near its 52-week low and is looking quite attractive at the price of 13.50. The company is beaten down by the performance and market shares of the Intel dual core chips, but AMD has the quad-core micro-architecture, Barcelona chips under its belts. Once Barcelona is released, AMD may reclaim its market share and drive its stock price up again. Plus, the stock price appears to be very good value at this point and there’s little risk for those who are willing to wait.

The Apprentice L.A. - Episode 8

Posted on March 27th, 2007 in News & Opinion by Smarty

The Apprentice Los Angeles episode 8 is about marketing the brand, GNC in a sports arena during half time. I learned something interesting in this episode.

Arrow’s team had a great idea and the concept was good, but it wouldn’t work in a half time sports event. Arrow’s marketing strategy required too much attention, and it was not something you would expect a sports crowd to give. The crowd would not sit there and think about. The marketing didn’t fit the environment. Perhaps it would work better in a theater.

Kinetic’s idea was more straightforward but it played out very well in the sports stadium. People in the stadium were pumped up with energy from watching soccer and it would take something exciting to keep the crowd’s attention. And Kinetic’s race challenge fitted well with the atmosphere. I would even take it a step further and use Angela’s Olympic athlete’s status to promote the brand.

Commuting to Work - Part 2

Posted on March 26th, 2007 in News & Opinion by Smarty

Commuting to New York City can be very stressful. The subways are crowded during rush hour and everyone is in a hurry. Because everyone is rushing to work, they are more likely to get into accidents and arguments with other people. Everyone is always in somebody’s way in the subway. There’s a lot of tension. Even a few seconds delay seem like forever, and then people tend to push. Pushing causes other people to react. And even if there’s nobody in front of you, you tend to walk fast in an attempt to reach work several seconds earlier. And this is where things can go wrong. You can slip on the stairs or bang into a wall. Accidents are more likely to occur when you rush, especially when you’re running for a train’s closing doors.

The same goes for drivers on the road. People who are running late tend to speed. When you’re thinking of making it to work as fast as you can, you don’t think about arriving safely as much. And needless to say, you unconsciously increase the chance of an accident.

I think it’s better to allocate yourself a sufficient amount of time in the morning to arrive to work without panicking and rushing. Perhaps you can wake up earlier, or you can eat breakfast at work instead of at home. And if you know you’re going to run late, it’s best to call in work and tell them you’re running late. At least then you’ve already notified the office and you give yourself some relief of meeting an unrealistic time. This way, you can pace yourself and not rush to work. In my opinion, it’s better to show up late then never.

ZOLT

Posted on March 24th, 2007 in Stocks by Smarty

I looked back at one of the mock portfolios I had created. It was called “Undiscovered Stocks,” and the mock portfolio was created in Feb 2006. I saw a 122% increased next to one of the stocks, and the ticker was ZOLT. In my notes next to the stock, I had written, “High Rated Carbon Fiber in high demand.” The stock shot up to nearly $40 in May 2006. The price has come down since and is hovering in the 30’s, still way above the price of 13.87 in my mock portfolio. The stock had gone through rough waves but the horizon ahead looks great. It has a growth rate of 50% for the next 5 years and is planning to tap into the emerging markets.
