In support of the Haiti Earthquake Relief efforts, this post serves as a source for information about donations to Haiti and legitimate charitable organizations that will provide aid to Haiti.
On January 12, Haiti was hit by a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake and according to the latest news on CNN (as of this article), the official death tolls have reached over 70,000 people. CNN reports that about 300,000 people are homeless and about 2 million people are in need of food.
The victims are in dire need of food (including water), shelter and clothing. Making a donation is the best way to help the earthquake victims in Haiti if you cannot be there to help in person. However, it is important to make sure that the charity is a legitimate one. One of the biggest concerns is that whether or not the donations will reach the hands of those in need of help.
There are many fake charities out there. Many scams have emerged as a result of the attention of the Haiti earthquake news in the media. It is best to do some research on the charity before a donation. To avoid scams and donate to the right people, look for a reputable charity, read more below. Also, research the percentage of the funds in the charity that goes to the Haiti Earthquake Relief.
Here is a short list of legitimate charitable organizations: (more…)
Every year, the first thing we do is talk about what we want for the coming year. We love to make New Year resolutions!! We talk about what want to do and accomplish. We have all these grand ideas in January. The start of a new year is like a clean whiteboard that allows us to start from scratch and make new drawings on the board, a representation for our life.
But what happens to all these ideas down the year? Often, they are either forgotten or faded out in our minds. Come April or May, we become too sick or tired of the resolutions that were made a few months ago. By July or August, we may not even remember a word that was said in January. This seems to happen year after year. Need proof? Ask your friends, your schoolmates, your colleagues, your family, or even yourself.
Fortunately, for you, this does not have to happen again. You will set better goals for yourself and find the energy to work towards them as if every month is January again. (more…)
When the holidays come, the first things that usually comes to mind are gifts, receiving and giving. There’s no question for the former, but for the latter, we always ask the same questions. Who do we give gifts/money to? And how much should we give to these people? (more…)
A good friend of mine recently complained that it was difficult for her to get her money back from friends. She had paid for a summer trip in the Hampton and she had to remind her friends many times for the money, and yet they haven’t paid her back. Let’s call my friend, Yvonne.
Yvonne wanted to ask for her money back, but she didn’t know how to do so. She did not want to be rude nor want they to think that she was mean. She decided to write an email reminding them of the amounts they owed her.
Ever wonder how much money do the popular people on YouTube make? I do too. I want to know if it is possible to make a living off video blogging on YouTube.
YouTube has a traffic rank of #3 on Alexa (as of writing) with over 100 million video views per day. It is without a doubt that YouTube is the largest user-published video network out there. With that many traffic, it is only logical for people to think about making money from publishing videos.
YouTube allows users to reach audiences not only in their country but in all countries around the world. It allows you or anyone to make and publish music, movies, comedy sketches, etc. The opportunities are abundant and the possibilities are endless.
Traditionally, if you want to produce music, you would need to find a record company to sign you up. Today, with YouTube, you can cut off the middle-person. Simply create an account on YouTube and upload your music videos to the largest user-published video network and reach millions of people. The same story goes for movie makers, comedians, dancers, etc.
Many people have taken advantage of this opportunity on YouTube. Some of the famous people are LisaNova, Kevjumba, Miaarose, theresident, Happyslip, Amber Lee Ettinger (Obama Girl), SupaDupaFlyGirl, lonelygirl15 (Jessica Rose), and many more. These people are very popular on YouTube and produce new content on a regular basis. So how much do they make? Well, since they don’t publish their earnings, I can only guess.
To figure out how much each person makes or is worth, I will use the the subscribers and channel views as indicators to calculate their earnings power and multiple the number of subscribers and channel views by a factor of 5 cents and 1 cent, respectively. Here is the hypothetical formula:
Annual Earnings Power = (# of Subscribers x $0.05) + (# of Channel Views x $.01)
Lisa Nova is famous for making comedy sketches and parodies. She is one of the first YouTube celebrities that I have clicked to subscribe. I remember that she started off with only a handful of videos. Now she has published over 100 videos and the list is growing! I would think that with her large audience base, she would be making the big bucks. However, that does not seem to be the case. In her recently published video, “LisaNova’s Non-Corporately Sponsored Holiday Contest!!!,” she mentions that although some YouTubers are making tons of money, she is not one of them. She is an independent entity as the title of her recent video suggests, and she supports people to make independent videos.
Annual Earnings Power = (148,989 Subscribers x $0.05) + (9,367,879 Channel Views x $.01) LisaNova’s Annual Earnings Power = $101,128
Kevin aka Kevjumba is famous for talking about his life as an Asian American and the stereotypes that he has to deal with. One of the famous videos he posted is a stare contest against Jessica Alba (to which she responded). Kevjumba’s channel is ranked #3 for the most subscribed channels of all times in the world.
Annual Earnings Power = (371,106 Subscribers x $0.05) + (12,001,138 Channel Views x $.01) Kevjumba’s Annual Earnings Power = $138,567

Miaarose is a singer and a song writer. She writes her own lyrics and publishes her music on YouTube. When I first saw her on YouTube, she only had a few videos. Now she has published 33 videos on YouTube.
Annual Earnings Power = (163,904 Subscribers x $0.05) + (11,146,877 Channel Views x $.01) Miaarose’s Annual Earnings Power = $119,664

Lori aka The Resident makes videos based on current events. Many of the recent videos relate to the presidential election and the economy. She goes out on the streets and interviews people to get their opinions as well.
Annual Earnings Power = (18,170 Subscribers x $0.05) + (749,185 Channel Views x $.01) Theresident Annual Earnings Power = $8,400 (seems a little low)
Christine aka HappySlip is known for making comedy videos. In her videos she also takes on multiple roles, playing not only as herself, but also as the mom, dad, uncle, aunt, friend, etc. This versatility in acting reminds me of actors like John Leguizamo and Mike Myers.
Annual Earnings Power = (248,219 Subscribers x $0.05) + (8,358,814 Channel Views x $.01) HappySlip’s Annual Earnings Power = $95,999
Amber Lee Ettinger aka Obama Girl is famous for her video titled, “I Got a Crush…On Obama,” which has more than 12 million hits. She also makes other videos related to politics.
Annual Earnings Power = (98,584 Subscribers x $0.05) + (5,016,618 Channel Views x $.01) Barelypolitical’s Annual Earnings Power = $55,095
Having traffic is the key to making money in YouTube. The more people viewing your videos, the more opportunities you will have to monetize on them. As you can see, the YouTube celebrities usually have high volume views in their channels.
The hypothetical formula is only a guess. It does not reflect the actual earnings of the YouTube people. Most people on YouTube do not discuss or comment on their earnings.
Do you publish videos and make money on YouTube? What type of videos and how much do you earn?
I recently saw the movie, Mad Money and one of the interesting parts in this movie is how they hide money. The main characters in the movie have illegally taken many bags of money home. They have to find a way to keep the cash from view, so they fill up every drawer and cabinet in their house with cash.
If you have a large stack of cash to put away, where would you hide them? There are people today that still do not like keep money in the bank. These people would store cash at home, in places that they think nobody can find.
How do you hide money so that thieves or robbers would not find them? You want to make sure that you hide your cash in a secret location that only you know about and nobody else knows.
A very popular place to store cash is under the mattress. In the old days, people always put important things under their bed. Now, everyone knows about the under-the-mattress secret location, and that has become a high-risk location now. People have to be more creative and think of new places to hide cash. Here are some examples of places to consider a spot for hidden cash.
Living Room
In a self-created mouse hole in the back corner and cover it with paint
In a concealed flap behind the television cabinet
Underneath the couch, in an inside pocket
Underneath your wood floor, in a self-created spot
Inside a concealed compartment of a large table
Kitchen
In a self-created compartment in one of the higher cabinets
In a hard to reach area, probably at the top of the cabinet, blocked by many food items
Underneath the sink, behind the pipes
Behind the oven/stove
Behind the refrigerator
Bathroom
Behind the mirror, before the wall (not inside a cabinet)
Inside a medicine box on the top shelf of the medicine cabinet
Behind the toilet, or inside the water tank, in a tightly sealed box/bottle
Underneath the sink, behind the pipes
Bedroom
In a self-created mouse hole in the back corner and cover it with paint
In a self-created compartment in a closet
In the pockets of an old jacket (identifiable for you) in the back of the closet
In a shoe box (identifiable for you), among many other shoe boxes
Inside or under a desk lamp table

Can you imagine the enormous number of one billion?
Well, first we should ask, how big is one billion? We know that one billion is one thousand million. And one million is one thousand thousands. One thousand is ten hundreds. We can say that one thousand is a large number, so one billion is way beyond our comprehension.
Here’s an interesting story that dates back to my middle school. My seventh grade science teacher gave a fun challenge on the first day of class. He said that if any one could write out all the numbers from one to one billion, that student will automatically receive a grade of 100 for the entire year. Upon hearing the news, the whole class started counting on paper. For about two weeks, every one was filling hundreds of pages with numbers. But it didn’t take long for people to give up. By the second or third week, more than half of the class gave up already. Within two months, everyone stopped writing numbers. People realized the goal was not achievable. The result… nobody was even close to one million.
The teacher said the greatest attempt was done a few years ago collaborated by a group of students, and he took out a huge stack of papers filled with numbers. It was an incredible sight, but those students did not make it anywhere close to the billion-mark, plus they had many number gaps.
We underestimated the size of one billion. I had no idea how big a billion was. Let’s analyze the time it would have taken me. If I wrote at the pace of 10,000 numbers per day for everyday of my life, it would have taken 274 years to reach the billion-mark. If I wrote at double that speed, it would have taken 137 years. Even If I wrote at the pace of 50,000 numbers per day, it would have taken 55 years to reach the target. In reality, I could not write 50,000 numbers a day nor would I waste my whole life writing numbers for one class.
I learned a valuable lesson. It made me understand better the concept of one billion. It is definitely more than I or any one can visualize. Below are some facts that will help you understand the magnitude of one billion dollars or just the sheer size of one billion.
Facts:
One billion = 1,000,000,000 or 10^9 (in U.S.A.)
A billion meters is almost three times the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
A billion kilometers is over six times the distance from the Earth to the Sun.
Crunchweb.net illustrates the size of Nine-Hundred Million dollars (Not exactly one billion dollars, but closely enough).
Nine-Hundred Million dollars… The mound of cash is now 20 feet tall, 50 feet long, and 31¼ feet wide. The single stack of dollar bills is now climbing to 300,000 feet, or 56.8 miles.
It is about half as long as a conventional tennis court.
This is the dollar amount for the damage caused by a natural disaster, according to insurance claims filed by victims in four states that were affected by a category 3 hurricane, (Dennis) in July, 2005.
This amount of money is what an ideal elementary school class size (400 students) can expect to earn in their lifetimes, combined.
